Coniston and the South Lakes area

The cottage is in easy reach of  Coniston and the Lake District attractions: walking in the mountains, exploring the villages and visiting historic houses such as Brantwood, John Ruskin's house and Hilltop, Beatrix Potter’s house.  7 miles to the south is Ulverston,  a pretty market town with a variety of shops, places to eat and drink, the Laurel and Hardy Museum.   Steam railway lovers can travel the Haverthwaite light railway to Windermere and garden lovers can visit several fine gardens within a 40 minute drive including Holker Hall,  Levens and  Holehird.

Coniston water is a couple of miles up the road (an easy cycle ride, walk or drive)  and along much of the shore there is public access and little beaches.   Here visitors can enjoy paddling, swimming, mucking about in rubber dinghies, jumping off the pier, canoeing and just sun bathing.  Coniston village is 8 miles away and from here there are walks up to the Old Man, Dow crag, Coniston Copper mines etc.  The village has good pubs and cafes,  the Coniston Brewing company, shops,  the Ruskin Museum and the Coniston Watersports Centre at the lake. There's so much to do, why not check out the link to the tourist information site, under the Links tab?
